Ch. PONTAC LYNCH Margaux

Ch. Pontac Lynch is one of my very favorite wines of Bordeaux. Why? Partly because of its location, partly because it is a bit of throw back, and partly because of its owner ship. The location is amazing. The 10-hectare property planted to 45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet-Franc, and 5% of Petit Verdot is on the eastern edge of the Margaux appellation touching Ch. Margaux on the north, Ch. d’Issan on the southeast, Ch. Palmer on the southwest, and Ch. Rauzan-Segla on the west (How’s that for a good address?). The terroir is a mix of gravel and sand with more gravel in the western part of the vineyard gradually transitioning to some more sand mixed with gravel in the eastern part of the vineyard – which is much like the terroir of Ch. Margaux. It’s a bit of throwback because of the very straight forward traditional Bordeaux wine making (old-school concrete tanks with pump-overs, a wood-stave basket press, oak barrel aging with enough-but-not-too-much new oak) that yields medium-weight, elegant, feminine wines with pure, pretty red fruit and classic Margaux perfume. And the chateau was owned by my late friend Marie Christine Bondon (who passed away after a years-long battle with cancer doing the summer of 2016) who liked the style and wanted to maintain it. The chateau is now under the care her like-minded sister Marie Helene.

Ch. PONTAC LYNCH, Margaux, 2015
60% is a blend of Cabernets (both Sauvignon and Franc) with 35% Merlot  and 5% Petite Verdot grown on a gravel-and-sand terroir fermented in concrete tanks with pump-overs and aged 14 months in all French oak barrels (33% new).    Red-purple color with well-formed legs; dry, medium-bodied with freshly balanced acidity and medium phenolics.    Beautiful juicy supple fresh (only) red fruit with perfume. The gravel and the sand are talking and what they are saying is “This is Margaux.” Pure, precise, delicious.  BearScore: 94+.
Cash Bottle: $37.99       Cash “Pick-Six” Bottle: $34.19

Nestled between Chex. Margaux, Rauzan segla, Palmer, and d’issas, Pontac Lynch is a “good address.”
