From a newer Champagne house established by a combination of the various branches of the famous Rothschild family, Barons de Rothschild (BdR)works at the very high end of Champagne with a Brut, a Blanc de Blancs, and a Rosé currently in distribution in Texas with three more cuvees to come. Already a star in the Champagne constellation, expect more good things from BdR.
BARONS de ROTHSCHILD Brut, Champagne, NV
A blend of blend of 60% Chardonnay primarily from the Côte des Blancs Grands crus and Premiers crus; and 40% Pinot Noir primarily from Verzenay, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay, and Ambonnay. 40% of the cuvee is reserve wines (all from grand and premier cru vineyards). After the second (bottle) fermentation, the cuvee is aged three years on its yeasts. Pale gold-straw -color; dry, medium light-bodied with fresh acidity and a hint of phenolics (which is not at all uncommon for richer Champagne cuvees). Richer and riper than the Blanc de Blancs with a fine toasty feel. Mix of red fruit and more citrus with a welcome hint of bitter at the end. Big enough to be food friendly. Will stand up to aging. Real deal serious and seriously good Brut Champagne. BearScore: 94.
