A PROPER ROSE from LAURENCE FERAUD
PINK PEGAU Rosé, Vin de France, 2018
From super-star Southern Rhone vigneron and winemaker Laurence Feraud (Domaine du Pegau and Ch. Pegau) comes this blend of 70% Cinsault, 20% Grenache, and 10% Carignan (older vines) fermented briefly on the skins (to pick up some color) and finished without the skins (to keep it Rosé rather than red) and bottled after minimal time in tank. Orange-salmon color with good legs; dry medium-light-bodied with fresh acidity and very light phenolics. Clean, spicy, ripe-but-fresh red berry essence fruit with enough citrus to keep it refreshing and enough mineral earth (with a hint of dustiness) to make it a proper Rosé (dry but with enough fruit and acidity as well as a sense of place). While Pink Pegau is more in the food Rosé camp than the beach (or pool) Rosé camp, it does have a toe in the water. BearScore: 91+.
