Pinot Pick: AVERAEN Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, 2015

avereanbottleThis new Averaen Pinot comes from the team at Banshee Wines and former Banshee winemaker Adam Smith who has since become an established (if still up-and-coming) player in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. This is a value-priced blend of different Willamette sub-AVAs that is a great introduction to the potential of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.

AVERAEN Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, 2015 ($19.79)
100% Pinot Noir (Pommard [own rooted], 667/1018, grafted Pommard, Pommard/Dijon mix, 113/114/115/777, and another Pommard/Dijon mixed planting) from the Meredith Mitchell, Deux Vert, Eola Springs, Holmes Gap, Chehalem Mountain, Valin, and Sisu vineyards fermented in a mix of temperature controlled stainless steel & wooden tanks, aged 10 months in all French oak barrels.    Red-purple in color with well formed legs; dry, medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and medium phenolics.  Delicious, supple, fresh, delicious red fruit Pinot Noir with notes of spice and cola. Layered while still fresh and alive in the mouth. YUM. BearScore: 93++.
