The Place: The vineyards of Champagne and the cellars of Charles Heidsieck.
The Wine:
CHARLES HEIDSIECK Brut Reserve, Champagne, NV ($51.99)
A blend of 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir, and 1/3 Pinot Meunier blended from 60 crus with 40% of the cuvee being reserve wines with an average of 10 years age. The cuvee is bottled in Charles Heidsieck’s unique bottle, put through the Champagne process, and aged on the lees (yeasts) for over three years before disgorgement and release. (Because the wine is bottled in its unique bottle, the customer is assured that Charles Hwidsieck made all the wine and handled all the steps from grapes to finished wine.) Medium golden straw in color and fully sparkling; dry, medium-light-bodied with fresh acidity and scant phenolics. Developed, richer style Champagne with riper fruit and lots of toast layered over a mineral core. Citrus and some red fruit. Richer, more food friendly style of Champagne at a very high quality level. BearScore: 93+.
