Donald Patz and James Hall, founders but no longer proprietors (but still running things and so still the motive force(s) behind Patz & Hall) since they sold earlier this year to Chateau Ste. Michelle.
The larger Sonoma Coast AVA (especially in the Russian River Valley part of it)
PATZ & HALL Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, 2014
100% Chardonnay from a mix of vineyards in the greater Sonoma Coast AVA including Sanchietti Pleasant Hill and Gap’s Crown as the core along with Parmalee Hill, Dutton Ranch, and Durell Vineyard, among others. Whole-cluster pressed with an indigenous yeast fermentation (along with a full malo-lactic fermentation) and weekly batonage (lees stirring) in all French oak barrels (35% new). Yellow straw in color with well formed legs; dry, medium-bodied with freshly balanced acidity and scant phenolics. Delicious, supple, fresh, more tree than citrus fruit but the citrus fruit is there along with some subtle tropical notes and a bit of fruit cocktail (in the positive sense). The integrated oak and mineral earth balance it nicely. Lovely in the mouth. BearScore: 92+.
