Situated just two miles from the rugged Pacific Ocean cliffs on the coastal ridges that border the Pacific Ocean, Flowers’ estate vineyards were some of the first planted on the “extreme” Sonoma Coast in 1991.
FLOWERS Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, 2014 ($43.99)
100% Chardonnay all from the northern cooler part of Sonoma Coast (aka “the extreme Sonoma Coast”). Whole clusters pressed with the juice was settled for 24 hours before gravity flow into small stainless steel tanks (20%) and French Oak barrels (80%) for a cool indigenous yeast fermentation with a natural (not inoculated) malo-lactic fermentation. Aged 11 months in all French oak barrels (18% new) . Straw in color, with green highlights and with well-formed legs; dry, medium-bodied with freshly balanced acidity and scant phenolics. Delicious, supple, fresh, focused, lovely Chardonnay with fresh citrus and ripe apple with some spice to go with oak and a mineral earthiness. Clean and refreshing with a vivid almost Riesling like tension. Brilliant. BearScore: 94+.
