Revealing Rose: Commanderie de BARGEMONE Rosé, Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, 2014

Bargemone_Photo_BrandRosé is hot. All over the world, dry Rosé has become the summer sipping wine of choice and nowhere does dry Rosé better than the south of France. For the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at some super summer sippers that are pretty in pink.

The Place:
The ancient Knights Templar “Commanderie” (barracks) and their surrounding vineyards in Aix en Provence.

The Story:
Bargemone has more than 160 acres under vines with 2/3 of the production dedicated to the dry rosé for which Provence is famous. Founded by Templar knights in the 13th century, the property was named “Bargemone” after the wealthy Provencal family that owned it for 200 years. In 1973, French industrialist Jean-Pierre Rozan bought the property, restored the buildings, and replanted the vineyards. In 2006, Rozan passed away and a controlling interest in the vineyards and winery was bought by current owners Christian and Marina Garin (both from local Provencal families).
Since then, a new tasting room has been built and style of Bargemone has changed from a salmon orange color and richer texture to more of a very pale pink with more of a white wine character.Bargemone_Rose_300dpi_Label

The Wine:
Commanderie de BARGEMONE Rosé, Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, 2014  ($13.99)
A 12.5% alcohol, sustainably grown Rosé blend 36% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, 21% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Rolle (Vermentino) tank fermented and aged with no oak and no malo-lactic fermentation. Pale-pink color with good legs; dry, light and fresh with scant phenolics. Elegant Rosé offering mineral and citrus with some red fruit essence and a bit of earthiness. Sneaks up on you as the bottles get empty before you’re ready. This is Rosé for a fancy picnic or lawn party or for sipping with light, fresh summer canapes – or potato chips. BearScore: 91.
