The Person: Catherine & Stephane Chaumont-Lopez (winemakers-owners along with her parents)
The Place: The Pauillac vineyards of Ch. Tour Sieujean located on the Bages plateau.
The Story: The grapes (from her family’s Pauillac vineyards) which used to be sold to the Pauillac co-op. Beginning in 2008, this young couple began to sell their wine from this new chateau. While the chateau (both house and chai) is located at the western edge of Pauillac, the vineyards are more favorably located on the Bages plateau. He is the winemaker and she does the marketing.
The Wine: Ch. TOUR SIEUJEAN, Pauillac, 2009 A 13% alcohol blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot (grown on the Bages plateau between Ch. Lynch Bages and Ch. Batailley) fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using pump-overs and aged in all French oak barrels (60% new). Purple in color with well formed legs; dry, medium-full-bodied with balanced acidity. Dense, dark, juicy-spicy black & red fruit with dusty-gravelly terroir, supple oak and accents of tobacco and pencil shavings. Very Long finish. Delicious, exciting, quite tasty; alive-in-the-mouth. Excellent. BearScore: 92.
