The Person:
Louis Barroul of Ch. Saint Cosme
The Place:
An old vine Grenache vineyard not too far from Nimes
The Wine:
Saint Cosme LITTLE JAMES Basket Press, Vin de France, NV  ($9.99)
A 13% alcohol, multi-vintage blend of 100% Grenache, half from the 2012 vintage and half from St. Cosme (Gigondas) owner Louis Barroul’s  solera containing all the vintages from 1999 to 2012 for this 2013 bottling. Sensory: Dusty red black in color with well formed legs; medium-bodied with balanced acidity and moderate phenolics. Dusty and rustic (in the right way) with grapey dark red and some black fruit with garrigue and black pepper and a hint of good coffee. Much more interesting and complex than its price would indicate – which is Louis’s goal in using the solera. Can be served a bit cooler (say 50°) than most reds. Great everyday red to go with Texas food. BearScore: 89.
